The Secret to Stunning Beach Photos of Your Dog: Off-Season Sessions
When you hear “beach photo session,” I bet you envision a warm summer day, fiery sunsets, and the whole family matchy-matchy in khakis & white button-downs.
But I’m here to tell you, the less-crowded, cooler, and often more dynamic option of an off-season beach session is where it’s at! Not only do we avoid the crowds, but off-season sessions offer unique lighting, scenery, and even a more relaxed pace. Often times we have the entire beach to ourselves, which is great for letting your pup stretch their legs off-leash. (Or on a very, verrrrryyy long line.)
Why I prefer off-season beach sessions:
Fewer People, More Peace
Imagine being able to let your dog run and play without the distractions of peak-season beach crowds. During the off-season, beaches are calm and nearly empty, which creates a more relaxed atmosphere. Dogs can roam without being overstimulated by other beachgoers or pets, and we’ll have the freedom to capture them at their happiest. With fewer people (and other pets) around, I can work creatively to capture intimate, natural photos that are all about your dog, your family, and your connection to the beach.
Creamy, Soft, Natural Lighting
One of the biggest advantages of off-season beach sessions is the beautiful lighting. In the cooler months, the sun sits lower in the sky, which creates a soft even glow that’s perfect for portrait photography. No need to worry about harsh shadows or squinting from the strong summer sun. Instead, we can capture your dog with warm, flattering light that brings out every detail, from their eyes to the texture of their fur. And since the golden hour tends to be longer in autumn and winter, we’ll have more time in that perfect light to get beautiful shots. The off-season also brings out unique colors in the landscape, from soft sand tones to rich blues and greys, which create a unique vibe you don’t get in summer photos.
The Perfect Temperature for Your Dog’s Energy Level
Most dogs feel more comfortable and playful in cooler weather, and they’re more likely to show off their unique personality. Whether your pup loves sprinting through the sand after seagulls, splashing in the water, or rolling around making sand-angels, the cooler temperatures mean they can stay active and engaged without getting overheated and only giving me the larger-than-life-tongue-hanging-out-the-side-of-their-wide-open-mouth look. For dogs who are especially active, like bird dogs and sporting breeds, the off-season allows them to run, jump, and play to their heart’s content—ideal for capturing their most joyful moments on camera.
Off-Season, Off-Leash (ish)
Some beaches will allow your pup to be off-leash during the off-season, but not during peak season, In fact, some beaches (looking at you Folly Beach, SC) wont even allow your dog on the beach during some hours of the day in the summer months. Whether you want your dog to run wild & free off-leash, or on a long line (that can be edited out of your photos) we’re much more likely to be able to do this during the fall and winter months.
The best adventure on a quiet beach
With the beach nearly to ourselves, off-season sessions capture a sense of adventure that can’t be found in crowded summer months. The beach feels open and wild, perfect for dogs who love exploring. This relaxed environment gives your dog space to be themselves, creating natural, playful photos that truly capture their personality.
Because we have the space to roam and work without interruptions, I can focus on capturing every moment — from your dog’s spontaneous zoomies to that contented expression they get after a satisfying splash in the water. There’s a peaceful quality to these sessions that not only shows in the photos but also makes the experience enjoyable for both you and your dog.
Tips for Planning Your Dog’s Off-Season Beach Session
If you’re ready to capture these special moments with your dog and family, here are a few tips to make the most of your off-season beach session:
Dress warmly: Autumn and winter on the beach can be chilly and windy, so bring layers for yourself and consider a cozy big blanket or jacket for your pup.
Timing is key: Early morning or late afternoon gives us beautiful light and an empty beach.
Stay open to wild weather surprises: Off-season weather can surprise us with misty mornings or dramatic clouds — Let’s embrace it!
Bring toys and meaningful items: If your dog has a favorite toy or treat, bring it along! It helps bring out their playful side and makes the experience fun:
Cohesive Clothing: I’ll help you with this one during our planning call, but just say NO to everyone in matching outfits. Instead, let’s coordinate clothing that looks cohesive for the whole family, and compliments your home decor, along with the colors of your dog and the colors of our setting. (I know, it’s a lot to consider, but don’t worry, that’s what I’m here for!)
This beautiful family and best pup Abbie were an absolute JOY to photograph.
Abbie’s parents say their favorite thing about her is her tail wags and happy sneezes when they come home. Also when she get on their bed at night, roll onto her back so the paws are all in the air and has a very vocal dream of chasing lizards!!!! Abbie has taught them what pure joy looks like and may or may not so secretly be moms favorite kid — she makes their family complete.
Is your pup’s happy place the beach? If so, let’s chat about your session this winter.
In my (personal & professional) opinion, the off-season is the ONLY time for beach sessions.
