5 things to bring to your dog's outdoor adventure photo shoot

Wondering about what to bring to your dog’s photo shoot? Here are 5 things you should be sure to pack!

1: Water

I know, the weather’s cooling off and if you’re like me, it can be hard to remember to stay hydrated. (Especially when you’re sucking down Starbucks until 3pm.)

But no matter the weather, more water is always better to have on our photo shoot. I always pack extra bottles in a car cooler, but most of the time, the car is a bit far to walk to every time you or your pup gets a little thirsty.

I recommend packing a big 40-oz vacuum-insulated water bottle for both you and your pup, along with a collapsible bowl.

2: Favorite toy

The more sentimental or silly, the better. Great for play, and capturing photos of what makes your dog the happiest is sure to always bring a smile to your face.

(Side note: If your dog is a little. . . . umm obsessive over their toys, (no judgement, you break out any round object and Kona sees NOTHING else) keep it hidden in a backpack til we need it.

3. Towels.

I promise a fun adventure in nature. I will NEVER promise a sparkling clean pup (or hooman) at the end of our time together. There’s exactly a 95.37% chance we’re going to get dirty, soaking wet, or both.

Towels, and maybe even a backseat hammock, will go a long way to keeping your car a bit cleaner while your dog is passed out on the way home.

4. Wardrobe change.

So we can capture the fun and fancy side of your relationship, this might mean wearing your favorite sundress, but also packing a swimsuit and play clothes. And it’s a great way to add variety to your final photos.

Worried about changing in the wild? Don’t be. I pack a pop-up privacy shelter for changing.

The below photos of Odin were from the same session!

5. The most important: A sense of humor, and a calm relaxed attitude.

Our dogs are highly attuned to our mood and can pick up on the little things we don’t even realize. The #1 thing that can kill your dog’s mood (and also my ability to get those happy, fun, ears-up photos you love) is to yell at them to sit and behave.

Dogs are gonna dog, y’all; they’re gonna jump, they’re gonna run wild, they’re going to bark, they’re not going to always listen and that’s 100% okay! This isn’t a Westminster dog show. And if I don’t go home covered in sweat and dog-kisses, I don’t consider it a success.

We’re going to play, get dirty, and live in the moment. The #1 key to a successful photo shoot is to keep it light, upbeat, and FUN. For everyone involved.
