5 Best Locations for a Richmond Dog Photoshoot

Choosing a location for your Richmond photoshoot doesn’t have to be tricky. While I always love to shoot in an area that holds special meaning to you and your dog, I also have a few favorite spots around the city to hold our session.

If you’re looking for some inspiration for your dog’s (or family/engagement/branding/etc) photoshoots - here are 5 RVA spots to try.

1: Belle Isle

One of RVA’s most popular spots, this historical site offers hiking and mountain biking trails, a gorgeous reflective quarry (with a rock-climbing wall), and huge rocks for sunbathing and enjoying views of the city.

When the James River is low you’ll also find shallow pools of water to splash around in near the rocks, or make your way along a footpath to the Easternmost tip for a sandy area with calmer waters.

Whether you’re wanting a historical, urban, or outdoorsy vibe to your photos, Belle Isle offers it all.

2: Reedy Creek

Right down the Buttermilk Trail from Belle Isle is a little more secluded spot. With a wildflower meadow, kayak launch, and creek leading to the river, this is a great spot for nature-inspired photos any time of the year.

3. Brown’s Island & Tredegar Iron Works

This six-acre riverfront park is perfect if you’re looking for a good mix of urban and nature. The huge field offers wide-open space to run and play, while the T. Typer Potterfield Memorial Bridge offers a more industrial vibe to your photos.

The start of the canal, under the CSX viaduct, is a great shallow spot for swimming and splashing, or floating like Deeks here, with the city or river as your background.

4. Libby Hill Park

For the less adventurous pups, Libby Hill Park is a great alternative. With fountains, benches, shade trees, paved walking paths, and stunning views of the city skyline and James River, this park is fun for the whole family.

5. Byrd Park

Richmond’s 200-acre park features lakes, hiking trails, the Dogwood Dell amphitheater, and a dog park. It’s home to the Carillon and just a short walk away from Pumphouse Park. Whether watching the geese at Swan Lake, playing fetch on the lawn underneath the Carillon, or hitting the trails with your pup, there’s plenty to do and lots of gorgeous spots to take advantage of. (Plus a few hills for killer silhouettes.)
